Camp Chesed, a one-week summer program for disabled Jewish students, will be held again this year in Woodland Hills.

About four dozens youngsters are expected this summer at the camp, which begins June 24 and is held at the West Valley Hebrew Academy, 5724 Oso Ave.

Staffed by more than 100 volunteer counselors, the camp aims to give Jewish students a greater understanding of the their culture, said Jacques Hay, camp director.

“We are not trying to convert anyone, but rather we hope the campers will just develop a deeper pride in their Jewish heritage,” he said.

Hay said the idea for the camp grew out of a desire by his daughter, Jalena, 11, to become more active in her community after watching her older brother, Joshua, raise $15,000 for a recently disabled athlete.

“After that I wanted to help,” Jalena said. “It really is fun to help others.”

Financed by donations, the camp will offer a variety of cultural and recreational activities, including a screening of the new Disney animated film “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre, a trip to Disneyland and a one-day “Wild West” festival.

The camp is free and transportation can be provided.
