Two children were critically injured in Long Beach on Sunday after a speeding car ran them down as they crossed a street with their mother, authorities said.

One-year-old Francisco Ibarra was in grave condition with severe head injuries at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. The condition of his 2-year-old sister Griselda was listed as serious, said Long Beach Fire Capt. James Watson. Their 22-year-old mother, Luc Estrada, was in fair condition, Watson said.

The driver, who witnesses said may have been driving in excess of 60 mph when he struck the trio at East 63th Street and Atlantic Avenue, was not injured in the 5:20 p.m. incident, Watson said. The pedestrians were not in a crosswalk when they were struck, he said.

Although police were still investigating the incident, the driver had not been arrested Sunday night. Watson said “there was no indication of drugs or alcohol.”
