School Board Must Fill Vacant Seat
As a result of Tom Chaffee’s surprise resignation last month from the Santa Ana Unified School District board, trustees tonight are expected to call for a November special election to fill his seat.
Chaffee’s seat would have been open in 1998, which means his replacement will have a two-year term.
The election will be held concurrently with the general election scheduled for Nov. 5. Three other school board seats will be on the ballot. They belong to Rosemarie Avila, Sal Mendoza and Audrey Yamagata-Noji.
Regular school board terms are for four years.
Past regular elections have cost the school district just over $31,000 each, said district Controller Robert W. Giritz. Rosalyn Lever of the county registrar of voters office said it would cost no more than $500 to add Chaffee’s name to the November ballot.
Chaffee resigned suddenly late last month. He faxed a two-paragraph letter to the school district saying he was resigning because he was moving out of the area.
