ORANGE — Wal-Mart Stores Inc. wants to replace the former Broadway department store at the Mall of Orange with a 142,285-square-foot store, according to documents filed with the city Planning Commission.
Plans submitted for review by city planners call for the existing building, which used to house a Broadway store, to be demolished. Wal-Mart, according to the documents, wants to build a single-story structure to replace the existing three-story building.
Wal-Mart’s proposal is scheduled to be heard Monday by the Orange Planning Commission. Wal-Mart already operates stores in Anaheim and Foothill Ranch and reportedly is looking for other sites in Orange County.
The Mall of Orange site was one of several that Federated Department Stores Inc. decided to close after its 1995 purchase of Broadway Stores Inc.
