Officials’ Cars

Re “Chief’s Car Inquiry Puzzles City Hall,” May 31:

The ongoing controversy over official cars furnished by the taxpayers to elected officials, appointed bureaucrats, et al., is patently offensive to those of us who provide those vehicles.

Wouldn’t it make more sense for everyone to drive the same make and model, with a choice of color the only option? Why doesn’t the city solicit bids from the Big Three auto makers every couple of years for a fleet of one-size-fits-all auto- mobiles?

The cost of buying and maintaining a large number of the same model vehicle would be substantially reduced in this climate of fiscal restraint. I’d rather have more police officers on the street in exchange for requiring my mayor, councilman and police chief to drive a Chevrolet Lumina, Ford Contour or Chrysler Cirrus, all available, fully equipped, for well under $20,000.

I think that it is high time for elected officials to buy their own cars. They have been spoiled long enough. They make enough salary to do this and taxpayers don’t have to subsidize them.
