Panel to Hold Public Meetings on Selection of Schools Chief

The citizens committee formed to make recommendations on the search for a new Los Angeles Unified School District superintendent has set three public meetings in June.

The 14 committee members--two named by each board member--are to report to the school board by July 15 on the merits and costs of local versus national searches and the criteria the board should use in choosing potential candidates. Current Supt. Sid Thompson has announced that he would step down in June 1997.

Board member David Tokofsky was the last to name his appointees Tuesday, selecting Los Angeles County labor leader Miguel Contreras and businessman Danny Villanueva Jr. Tokofsky has been under pressure from some Latino activists who favor Deputy Supt. Ruben Zacarias as Thompson’s replacement.

The three meetings are scheduled for Thursday, Monday and June 24. They will begin at 7 p.m. in Room H-163 at the district’s downtown headquarters, 450 N. Grand Ave.
