Arbitrator Rules Against Rubbermaid in Labor Case: Rubbermaid Inc. has been directed to pay $1.8 million in back pay and benefits to 65 members of United Steelworkers Local 451 who lost their jobs when the company closed its Carson warehouse and distribution center, the union said. In making the award, arbitrator Reginald Alleyne said the company had moved work from Carson to a plant in Marysville, Tenn., in 1995 without permitting the employees to move or offering to compensate them appropriately. Rubbermaid spokeswoman Lorrie Crum said the Wooster, Ohio-based company believes the arbitrator’s decision is wrong and that it will “explore every option for final resolution.” She would not elaborate.
