RUSSIA : Mayor Fatally Shot; Motive Unclear
The mayor of a town that is the center of Russian aerospace research was found dead in his apartment building in what police called an apparent contract killing. But President Boris N. Yeltsin said it was a “terrorist act” to intimidate voters before Sunday’s election. A neighbor discovered the body of Viktor Mosalov, the mayor of Zhukovsky, in a stairwell in his building 13 miles southeast of Moscow, said Gennady Melnik, a spokesman for the Moscow region’s Interior Department. Police said Mosalov had been shot in the head.
