Panel May Be Formed to Study Arts Funding

Hoping to find new ways to pay for city cultural programs and activities, the City Council on Monday will consider appointing an ad hoc committee to explore funding options.

The committee is proposed to be made up of council members, residents and representatives of the Allied Arts Board and Art Center Foundation.

The committee was proposed after city officials and Art Center Foundation members discussed the need to find other funds to support the Huntington Beach Art Center, to relieve the city’s cash-strapped general fund from financing it.

The city will contribute $81,000 toward Art Center operating costs this fiscal year. Art Center program income--from ticket sales, admissions and other sources--is expected to raise $100,000.

The Art Center Foundation, the center’s private fund-raising organization, has raised $110,000 toward its $220,000 commitment this year, said Dr. Gerald Chapman, a foundation board member.

Upcoming fund-raisers are expected to bring in the remaining money, Chapman said.
