Trash Fees to Be Cut by 17%, Sewer Fees by 12%

The Midway City Sanitary District will reduce its customers’ fees beginning July 1.

Trash fees will be reduced by 17%, and sewer fees will be cut by 12%, said John Norman, the district’s general manger.

Residents now can expect to pay $96 annually, on average, for combined trash and sewer services instead of $115, the average during the 1995-96 fiscal year.

The fee reduction was made possible by the district’s implementation of an automated trash collection service. In 1995, the district bought a new fleet of 10 trucks with mechanical arms to pick up special trash cans that were distributed to all customers.

This enabled the district to eliminate eight trash collector positions, cutting salaries and workers’ compensation expenses.

Norman said the combination of the new trash collection system and the reductions in staff will save the district about $400,000 annually. The district’s yearly budget is $4 million.

The district provides services to 90,000 customers in Midway City and portions of Westminster and Garden Grove.
