Council Ends Dispute by Deciding ‘Flight’ Sculpture Can Stay Put

“Flight,” the 5,000-pound sculpture that became the center of a controversy when the City Council voted to move it, will stay put.

A decision to move the 20-foot-tall artwork, which many residents say resembles a giant hockey stick, was reversed this week by the council, which voted last month to move it from the lawn between City Hall and the Fullerton Public Library to the municipal airport.

Councilwoman Jan M. Flory, who originally supported the move, said she changed her mind after learning the history of the sculpture.

Several residents told the council two weeks ago that sculptor Aldo Casanova was commissioned in the mid-1970s to create “Flight” as the city sought ways to commemorate the nation’s 200th anniversary.

The sculpture was dedicated in 1978 after having been designed specifically for its current location, the residents told officials.

City Council members said they now will consider accepting a resident’s offer to donate a sculpture for the airport.
