The Sylmar / San Fernando Transit and Child Care Center is accepting applications from commuters and others with a need for child day-care services.

The new $1.2-million center, which officially opens June 28 near the Sylmar / San Fernando MetroLink Station, offers preschool classes and can accommodate about 70 youngsters, said Desiree Portillo-Rabinov, the MTA’s project manager for the San Fernando Valley area.

The facility was built with a combination of funds from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation and state funds, Portillo-Rabinov said.

So far, about 10 people have requested applications to enroll their kids in the center, she said. The facility, which will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, was designed to accommodate commuters who use MetroLink trains and municipal buses or ride-share in automobiles.

The center’s services will be available to families in the community even if they do not commute from the station, officials said, but commuters will be offered transit subsidies providing discounts on day-care tuition or transit passes. The facility will be open to children 6 weeks to 5 years old. Weekly rates will range from $90 to $130, depending on the age of the child.

The building has more than 5,000 square feet of interior space and provides energy-efficient lights, heating and air-conditioning. It is at the corner of Hubbard Street and Frank Modugno Drive (formerly 1st Street).

An opening ceremony including tours will be held at 9 a.m. June 28 at the center, located at 2100 Frank Modugno Drive.
