School District Holds Off on New Math Books
New math textbooks for the eight elementary schools in the Redondo Beach Unified School District will have to wait another year. The school board decided earlier this month that it would be better to hire a math consultant for two years to train teachers and parents in teaching basic math skills before buying more books.
A committee of teachers and parents will meet for five days starting July 1 and decide what they want in grade-level expectancy and also how to integrate parents into the teaching process.
By May 1997, a committee should have a list of math textbooks that will be recommended for the 1997-98 school year.
