Update / Follow-up on the news : Street Project May Go on Ballot
- Share via
A debate over widening Imperial Highway, which first became an issue more than two years ago, continues to rage.
The Organization of Unified and Concerned Homeowners, a citizens group known as OUCH, opposes the city’s proposal to expand the highway and has declared that it will have enough signatures on petitions to put the issue on the November ballot.
The group says the project threatens the city’s small-town ambience because the street, if widened, would be heavily traveled as a shortcut between the Orange and Riverside freeways.
The majority of the City Council favors the plan, saying it would relieve congestion on the thoroughfare.
Several council members said they support the group’s signature drive, however, so that voters can settle the issue.
Mayor John M. Gullixson said such a measure would be sure to be passed by the voters, contrary to what OUCH members say, because opinion polls demonstrate widespread support for the project.
