NICARAGUA : Dozens of Election Officials Kidnapped
From Times Wire Reports
Rearmed Contra rebels kidnapped more than 50 election officials in the north and demanded that the army and police withdraw from the area, an electoral official said. The 38 men and 13 women were helping to draw up voter registration rolls for Oct. 20 general elections. Rosa Marina Zelaya, president of the Supreme Electoral Council, said she had received word that the kidnappers took their captives into Honduras and were “demanding that a Honduras-Nicaraguan commission be set up to negotiate their freedom.”
