The Good Fight: AIDS Care of Ventura...

The Good Fight: AIDS Care of Ventura County turned 10 years old this week, a milestone achieved with mixed emotion. . . . “Personally, I’d like to report that we were going out of business soon, or that we were winding things down because we had gotten a handle on this epidemic,” said Doug Green, executive director of the Ventura-based nonprofit agency. “But I don’t see that happening.” . . . The group expects its $250,000 budget to increase by $100,000 next year.

Water World: The first day of summer was celebrated throughout the county Thursday (B1), including at the community swimming pool in Oxnard’s La Colonia neighborhood. . . . For the third straight year, the pool is open to kids there after being shut down for several years because of budget cuts. Federal grant money was used to reopen the pool this week. . . . “It’s great that we were able to make this available for the kids this summer,” said Paul Ronan of the city recreation department.

Air Attack: Speaking of summer, the longer days aren’t all fun and horseplay. Warm weather signals the start of mosquito season in Ventura County, and residents are being urged to take precautions. . . . Neglected swimming pools and other sources of standing water are the breeding ground of the mosquito. Those sources should be emptied or, when possible, stocked with mosquito-eating fish. . . . “Every area has its hot spots,” said environmental health worker Randy Smith.
