Manager Tom Lasorda walked into the clubhouse before the game and bumped into shortstop Greg Gagne, who was activated after sitting out 29 consecutive games because of a sprained left ankle.
“Welcome back Greg!” Lasorda bellowed.
Gagne, sidelined since May 15, was happy to return.
“I’m just looking forward to getting back into the swing of things,” he said. “I missed a month and a week and the only thing you could do was sit and get healthy and try to encourage guys as much as you can just sitting on the bench.
“A lot of people probably have worse problems than me, but it was no fun. We’ve still got a pretty good part of the season left and I’m looking forward to just going out and doing the best I can do and things are going to be all right.”
