Judge Candidates by Who They Are

Re “Colorblindness in Voting,” June 14 editorial:

Despite the past record of minority representation, whites will vote for a minority. Another example to the ones given in the editorial is Rep. J.C. Watts (R-Oklahoma), an African American who represents a district which is 90% white and 10% minority. This seems to be happening more and will continue into the future.

With regards to the example you presented pertaining to Latinos, it may be that although there are many Latinos in Los Angeles County, many of them may not be able to vote. Even with the amnesty programs of the past, people who qualified became resident aliens. Until these people actually become citizens, they will not be able to vote. Is it possible that people just didn’t care for their stances on issues? What about former Supervisor Gaddi Vasquez in Orange County? He did not have a problem getting elected and reelected in a district that wasn’t majority Latino. Candidates should be elected because of who they are, not what they are.
