Offering Mail List Help
An extensive ZIP Code realignment scheduled to take place in Orange County starting July 1 could create headaches for businesses with Orange County mailing lists. But the U.S. Postal Service is offering to help companies upgrade their mailing lists for free.
The service is available to companies that maintain their mailing lists on computer and can submit their lists on a floppy disk in ASCII fixed-field format, a common computer format for storing text, said Richard Maher, a spokesman for the Postal Service. The service is not available until July 1.
The ZIP Code realignment will affect about 318,000 business and residential customers in Atwood, Brea, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Irvine, Orange, Placentia, Tustin, Villa Park and Yorba Linda. The realignment is necessary, Maher said, because the region has experienced a 25% surge in mail volume over the past 10 years.
The first three digits of a ZIP Code correspond to the plant where a piece of mail should be sorted, Maher said. The new ZIP Codes in Orange County will direct much of the region’s mail to a new sorting plant that opened in Anaheim last year.
