Galaxy of Players in All-Star Game

Major League Soccer rewarded the Galaxy for its 11-0 start Monday by selecting five players to the Western Conference all-star team, but, apparently, that was not reward enough.

Midfielders Cobi Jones and Mauricio Cienfuegos, forward Eduardo Hurtado, defender Robin Fraser and goalkeeper Jorge Campos were all selected starters for the July 14 game at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. The Galaxy’s Lothar Osiander will coach the West squad.

Despite having more starters then any other team, the reaction from the Galaxy was mixed.

“It is an honor, and I feel like we are being rewarded, but still I feel that we should have had more players selected,” Fraser said. “There is no reason why a guy like [Dan] Calichman should not be selected, or [Mark] Semioli, and there are a few other guys who should be on that team.”

The Dallas Burn also placed five players on the West team. San Jose had three players picked, including forward Eric Wynalda.

“If you look at the players on our team, there are players at every position as strong any player that was selected,” Hurtado said through a translator.

The West will play a group from the Eastern Conference, which includes five players from the Tampa Bay Mutiny, led by midfielder Carlos Valderrama and forward Martin Vasquez, and coached by the Mutiny’s Thomas Rongen. Also on the East are defenseman Alexi Lalas of the New England Revolution and midfielder Tab Ramos and goalkeeper Tony Meola of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars.

FIFA, world soccer’s governing body, also selected a group of world stars that will play Brazil before the MLS All-Star game. Campos was also selected to that team, meaning he will probably play a doubleheader July 14.
