On the Rox Rebounds to Its Glory

Over the years, On the Rox has been the site of numerous dance club promotions. From Euro-trashy disco parties to alternative music hipster hangs, the one-room nightclub located above the Roxy has offered a comfortable hideaway from the mayhem on the Sunset Strip below.

Its most infamous incarnation was during Heidi Fleiss’ heyday, when her pal Victoria Sellers ran the biweekly club and Fleiss and her entourage were regulars. When Fleiss was busted, On the Rox was on the rocks.

But fans of the club can take heart: Three weeks ago On the Rox reopened on Friday nights, and the line to get in is already forming. (Last week a crowd was hovering by 10 p.m.--tres early for clubland.)

Offering a smooth concoction of R&B;, old soul and funk, deejay Ben Yang is armed with loads of vintage Marvin Gaye and Rick James--a nice fit for the simple, ‘80s glam decor of neon lighting and overstuffed couches.

As in the past, On the Rox is still primarily a private affair. That doesn’t mean the public isn’t invited, but you have to do a little pre-planning. Because it’s such a small space, a guest list is required. Would-be visitors need to call in advance, leaving name, phone number and total guests in the party. If you don’t get a call back, you’re in.

Club Buzz: The promoters who reopened On the Rox are hoping to give Saturday Night Fever (at the Roxbury) some competition with the brand-new Saturday Night Large, an extravagant monthly affair at the Hollywood Athletic Club. The grand opening, which occurred last Saturday and drew more than 2,000, according to the promoters, offered nine rooms of action and four simultaneous musical happenings (one room featured Sticky Fingers, a Rolling Stones tribute band, while a VIP lounge reunited three members of Quiet Riot for an acoustic set).

The next Saturday Night Large is slated for July 27, and wannabe dancers can expect everything from “Euro-techno” and disco to funk and house music. The cover’s a whopping $20, but apparently Saturday Night Large does its best to keep you entertained.
