Eleven men were arrested Wednesday in a sweep intended to send a message to convicted sex offenders who ignore an 18-month-old law requiring them to register with police each year.

“We’re just trying to do what the people want, and that’s find out where these folks are,” police Lt. Ted Labahn said. “We think it’s our responsibility.”

Nine men were arrested on suspicion of failing to register within 10 days of either their birthdays or moves to a new residence. They were identified as Lawrence Aiello, 63; Andre Vernon Edwards, 35; Adolfo Gonzalez, 50; Carl Furman Johnson, 29; Steven Phillip Jones, 41; Wilson Chatman Oquin, 62; Jorge Dominguez Reyes, 40; Walter Wacker, 48; and Patrick Zambrano, 38.

The sweep also led to the arrest of Charles Webster Cobb, 23, who was wanted on suspicion of sex with a minor, a felony. He was jailed without bail, Labahn said.

Aiello was jailed in lieu of $150,000 bail, and Edwards’ bail was set at $50,000. The rest of the felony suspects were being held on $10,000 bail, Labahn said.

Another man, Eui Joon Byun, 33, was arrested during the sweep on suspicion of failing to update his registration upon moving into the city, a misdemeanor, Labahn said. Byun was being held Wednesday in lieu of $500 bail.
