School Budget Adds 28 Teachers

Anticipating student enrollment of about 19,000 this fall, an increase of 800, trustees of the Anaheim City School District this week passed a budget for fiscal 1996-97 that designates funds to hire 28 more teachers, three vice principals and support personnel.

The district has already brought in portable classrooms, instituted year-round schedules and modified school boundaries to accommodate its growing enrollment. The budget will likely be revised this fall when district officials know exactly how much money they will receive from the state.

“We are going on a lot of assumptions” until then, said Maria-Elena Romero, assistant superintendent of business administration for the central Anaheim district.

Romero estimated that the district will have an income of $81.7 million for the coming year and expenditures of $80.8 million. That compares to income of $78 million and expenditures of $73 million for the current year.
