The push by California twirlers to land the 50th anniversary National Square Dance Convention succeeded: The 2001 event will be in Anaheim.

“California deserved it. They worked hard to get it,” said Ken Peters of the national executive committee, which made the decision on the 2001 site during last weekend’s national convention in Texas.

More than 1,300 Californians attended the gathering in San Antonio, underscoring the state’s case to host the golden anniversary convention.

“We’re winners. We’re bringing the convention home to California,” said Bob Byram of Signal Hill, who will chair the Anaheim event. It is anticipated that 50,000 square dancers will attend.
