Hot Nights

Monday was a sizzler (see above), and we may be in for more this week (B1). . . . Hot weather concerns the police, who note that tempers, like mercury, also rise in the heat. Los Angeles police say they respond to more calls of violence during the summer months, prompting more patrols on Valley streets. Says Lt. Dan Hoffman of the Valley Bureau: “They’ve had all day to drink. The nights get cool and people let loose.”

While the Van Nuys courthouse might not have felt any different Monday morning--it was. The scaffolding blocking the front entrance--erected two days after the 1994 Northridge earthquake--came down over the weekend. But the entryway, which has been jammed, remained so: An X-ray machine broke down, causing yet another delay at the door. . . . “Today was not a good example,” said court official Rob Quist. “But it will get better.”

Hot Fight

The LAUSD Board of Education selected a new president Monday. . . . Jeff Horton, who represents parts of Van Nuys and North Hollywood, has pledged to help Valley students--and convince parents that breaking up the school district won’t help their kids’ education. “It’ll be hard to do, but that’s the job,” said Horton. “I’m going to fight for the rights of kids in the Valley.”
