HINDU TEACHER: Bhagavati Vijayeswari Devi, also known as Karunamayi (“the compassionate one”), will visit Sunday at the Congregational Church of Chatsworth, 20440 Lassen St. The spiritual teacher from India teaches and answers questions in English. A TIME TO DANCE: A dinner-dance honoring three African-American men of Parks Chapel AME Church will be held July 12 at the Odyssey restaurant, 15600 Odyssey Drive, Granada Hills. The names of the teen, mid-lifer and senior citizen being honored will remain secret until the night of the event. Festivities are planned from 6:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Cost is $50 per person. MUSIC FESTIVAL: The third annual Summer Music Festival will begin Wednesday at the Holy Spirit Retreat Center in Encino. Held at 7:30 p.m. on four consecutive Wednesdays, the festival will open with an evening of Celtic music with Dennis and Paula Doyle and Erich Sylvester. Deirdre Rogers will sing folk songs on July 17, the a cappella group Sing will perform July 24, and the chamber music group Star Society will close the series on July 31. EXHIBIT OPENING: A display of graphic and photographic works by Mariona Barkus and Sheila Pinkel, critics of the social and political scene, will open Sunday at the University of Judaism’s Platt Gallery. The exhibit, titled “Image and Text: Speaking Out,” features Barkus’ photos, combined with gleanings from newspapers and magazines, and Pinkel’s embellished photographs, embedded with text that reflects her love of nature. A reception is planned from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the gallery on campus, 15600 Mulholland Drive, Los Angeles. Gallery hours for the exhibition, which closes Aug. 11, are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday through Friday. Admission is free and docent tours are available upon request.

SONGS OF SUMMER: St. Paul’s United Methodist Church of Tarzana will present an instrumental and vocal concert titled “Gossamer Wings of Song” at 1 p.m. July 14 at 5619 Lindley Ave. Selections will include works by George Gershwin, Jerome Kern and Andrew Lloyd Webber. EXODUS STUDY: Commentator Dennis Prager will explore the contemporary meaning of the Book of Exodus in a four-week course beginning Tuesday at the University of Judaism. Well-known for his dialogues with listeners on KABC talk radio, Prager is engaged in a verse-by-verse study of the Torah. GRIEF SUPPORT: Beyond Loss, a bereavement ministry in partnership with the chaplain’s department of Glendale Adventist Medical Center, is offering three ongoing support groups for people who have lost loved ones. The groups meet from 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays, 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and 10 to 11 a.m. Thursdays. A seven-week bereavement facilitator certificate training course is also available from the hospital through the Rev. Alice Zulli, a certified grief counselor and bereavement group facilitator.
