City Negotiating for Roller Hockey Site

Roller hockey has become so popular here that the City Council has appropriated $150,000 to build a rink next year.

The money is included in the city’s parks and recreation budget for fiscal 1996-97. Park officials said the fees charged to hockey participants are expected to recover the construction cost in about two years.

“We’re really looking forward to this,” parks and recreation director Marvin C. DeCarlo said of the rink. “Right now we’re looking at putting it at King Elementary School.”

DeCarlo said park officials are negotiating with the Cypress School District regarding property that might be available at the school. None of the city’s parks have space for a new rink, he said. Roller hockey games are now played on a former tennis court at Cypress Park.

When a rink site is found, DeCarlo said, a concrete slab will be poured for the skating surface. Sidewalls and a gated area will be erected, and lights will be installed for night games.

DeCarlo said the popularity of roller hockey for both youths and adults is growing rapidly across Southern California.

“It’s a new sport, and there are a lot of children who are involved in roller hockey who aren’t involved in Little League and football or some of the other activities,” he said.
