Setting Record Straight on Borg’s Effort in Open
In Julie Cart’s story of June 22 on Bjorn Borg’s remarkable run at Wimbledon, she writes of 1981, “after losing early in the U.S. Open later in the summer, Borg left the court and, still in his tennis clothes, drove directly to the airport to fly home.”
Borg not only advanced to the final, he won the first set from John McEnroe, who took the next three and the title. Borg did leave the grounds immediately, skipping the media conference, but the reason was that there had been a telephoned death threat against him.
Research is good. Accuracy is better.
