Three Martinez Homers Carry Mariners to Win

ARLINGTON, Texas — Edgar Martinez hit three home runs and Alex Rodriguez hit his third grand slam of the season for the Seattle Mariners, who defeated the Texas Rangers, 9-5, Saturday night.
Martinez matched the team record for homers in a game. He became the seventh Seattle player to homer three times, including Ken Griffey Jr. and Dan Wilson this season.
“I just had one of those career days,’ said Martinez, whose three solo homers gave him 22 this season. “It came at the right time against a tough team. It’s a personal accomplishment. I don’t think it’s going to happen many times, so I will just enjoy it.”
Martinez credited Rodriguez, who tied a team record for most grand slams in a season, for igniting the Mariner offense.
Jay Buhner hit his 23rd homer for the Mariners.
