Equestrians Discourage Backers of Mountain Bike Race in Park

Horseback riding enthusiasts appeared Monday to have discouraged promoters of a professional mountain bike race from trying to get a permit for a race on Griffith Park trails this fall.
The city Recreation and Parks Commission approved “in concept” a conditional use permit for the Oct. 20 race.
But Oscar Arslanian of Salem, Mass.-based ProMonde said he does not think he can stage the race without using fire roads, which are designated as horse trails.
“It looks like a lost cause,” Baum told a mayoral aide after listening to the sometimes angry testimony of horseback riders.
Equestrians told commissioners about run-ins with mountain bikers that had spooked horses, and, in some cases, resulted in injuries.
