NBA Teams Warned Not to Jump Gun
The NBA on Monday notified its teams by electronic mail to carefully observe today’s deadline for starting negotiations with free agents--adding that if no labor agreement is signed, it will again lock players out.
The deadline is 9 a.m. PDT. Representatives for the league and the players’ union recently announced agreement on all points but were still working on the final draft Monday night.
An NBA spokesman said no substantive issues remain. Another source says if the league does again impose a lockout, it will probably be a short one, measured in days, not weeks.
“The league isn’t opening the door,” said an Eastern Conference executive, “until they’ve got a signed agreement.”
