Projects in Van Nuys and Sherman Oaks aimed at reducing the threat of flooding during winter storms should be finished by rainy season, Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavky’s office announced Wednesday.

Beginning next month, workers in Van Nuys will build a reinforced concrete channel in Pacoima Wash and a storm drain system adjacent to Raymer Street and Cabrito Road for $1.6 million.

The contract was awarded to Southern California Underground Contractors Inc. of Brea, the lowest bidder. The work should be completed by December.

During that time, portions of Cabrito Road, Raymer Street and Willis Avenue may be closed to through traffic.

Yaroslavsky also announced that starting this month, crews will begin cleaning about 2,900 street drains in Sherman Oaks and nearby unincorporated areas.

The contract was awarded to Martha Guidino & Brothers of Los Angeles for $54,620, which was the lowest bid. The project is scheduled to be completed in September.
