Farmers Raise Funds for Scout Programs
About 40 local produce growers and shippers have raised almost $40,000 for Boy Scouts programs in Ventura County, according to Joe Boskovich, owner of Boskovich Farms in Oxnard and a board member of the Scouting county council.
The proceeds were generated by sales of locally grown produce to buyers in Cleveland and New York City as well as cash donations made by more than 30 agricultural vendors, Boskovich said. This year’s fund-raiser surpassed 1995’s effort by almost $3,000.
The funds benefit more than 7,000 young people in Ventura County who participate in character, leadership and physical-fitness programs through the Boy Scouts, Boskovich said.
“When business communities . . . come together for a cause as worthy as Scouting, I am encouraged about Ventura County’s future,” said Sheriff Larry Carpenter, who served as honorary chairman for this year’s sale.
Sunkist Growers also participated in the fund-raiser, and Martac, a division of UPS, donated the trucks for shipping the produce.
