Raymond A. Butler of Ventura, known to many as “Papa Butler,” has died. He was 92.

A retired machinist for Southern Pacific Railroad, Butler lived in Ventura County with his wife, Helen, for 25 years.

Butler was born July 28, 1903, in Tombstone, Ariz.

He grew up in Los Angeles, later working as a precision tool and die maker.

He started out as a machinist for Southern Pacific and worked his way up to supervisor.

He is credited with designing many machines still used by the railroad.

Butler is survived by his wife and one daughter, Shirley Henniger, both of Ventura.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Kirt Anderson of Community Presbyterian Church of Ventura officiating. Burial will be in Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura.
