JETHAWK REPORT : He’s Catching the Worst of It

A catcher saying he’s been banged up is kind of like a mailman saying dogs have been chasing him. But Scot Sealy’s season has gone beyond the normal beatings most catchers endure.

“This has definitely been my worst year behind the plate,” Sealy said. “This is the most I’ve been banged up.”

Sealy has broken his left thumb and nearly broken a toe on foul tips this season. He’s even had trouble at bat, getting hit on the left thumb by a fastball last week.

You’d think with all the nagging injuries he would have trouble maintaining consistency at the plate. Not so. He’s batting .284 with nine homers and 41 runs batted in, all career highs.

“I guess beating the . . . out of me is what it takes,” Sealy said.

Second baseman Chris Dean took ground balls Friday for the first time since injuring his hamstring three weeks ago. He has been hitting and sprinting for the past few days.

“I feel good,” he said. “I’m ready to go.”

The JetHawks were gently chiding Bob Wolcott during batting practice when he was not immediately manning the bucket behind second base, as is the duty of the previous game’s starting pitcher. “Let’s go, big-leaguer,” Manager Dave Brundage chided. Wolcott will not return to the Seattle Mariners until Sunday, because the Mariners don’t have a roster spot for him yet.
