Opinions Cross on Foot Bridge

Share

So, the Vietnamese are upset about the architectural design of the proposed foot bridge to link two shopping centers in little Saigon. (“Acrimony Over Project Called ‘Harmony,’ ” June 25.)

They seem to be upset because some other culture is being forced on them, which will be a daily reminder of bad memories. Well, now they might understand how the longtime residents of Garden Grove and Westminster feel every time they drive down Bolsa or Westminster.

I know many residents who resented the community in which they live being turned into little Saigon and seeing the American architecture and identity disappear from their city. This change coming to the cities where generations of them grew up. This coming just a few short years after having to bury their family members who had to fight the war in Vietnam in which many Americans believe we had no obligation to defend in the first place.

If the bridge is built as designed, maybe the Vietnamese will come to understand how the residents feel when they are reminded daily of their loved ones who are no longer with them and the hometown that is no longer with them.

* I wholeheartedly agree with Mai Cong’s and Ding Le’s point of view. America is known as the land of immigrants, the land of “multiple cultures” where mixed blood marriages occur every day, a young country with no lengthy history or 2-centuries-old churches.

However, Little Saigon should have its own features; its uniqueness should be seen in its buildings, architectures and its unique people. Branding this community as an “Asian” one will hurt its reputation more.

Little Saigon should give tourists a “Vietnamese” experience that they can feel right here without leaving America. What better way to convey this than through its unique cuisine, its people and its surroundings?

It should be a different feeling than going through San Francisco’s famous Chinatown or Japanese town. Why do people go to Tijuana or German festivals? Why do Americans travel so much? To experience a different feeling! Besides Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm and the sunny beaches, Little Saigon can be another attractive year-round sight for tourists to visit in Orange County. By letting its uniqueness shine through, I believe Southern California will gain more.
