New Home Project Sales Increase by Nearly 28%
The top 50 best-selling new home projects in Southern California sold a total of 1,570 homes during the first quarter of 1996, a 27.6% increase over a year ago, according to the Meyers Group, an Irvine real estate information company.
“The market leader of the six-county region is Orange County, which had 12 best-selling projects,” said Jeffrey S. Meyers, president of the Meyers Group. “Sales are up 33% year to date, and only 3.5% behind 1989 levels.”

Builder--An article on the best-selling new homes in Southern California (“New Home Project Sales Increase by Nearly 28%,” July 14) misspelled the name of the builder of the No. 5 project. The correct name SPELLING? is Anastasi.
And it is not just the lower-priced entry-level homes that are selling, he said. “The move-up market has begun to sell as well, in response to improvement in the resale market,” Meyers said.
For example, he said, Standard Pacific, based in Costa Mesa, opened a project called Harbor Cover in Newport Beach and sold 20 in one day. Average price: $500,000. In Coto de Caza, he said, Polygon Homes sold 14 homes on the day it opened its Glen Eagles project.
The weighted average price of top sellers increased more than $3,500 to $172,295.
The best-selling project in the first quarter was Sun City Palm Desert in Palm Desert. The age-restricted development by Del Webb Co., which offers homes priced from $139,200 to $295,400, sold a total of 75 homes in the quarter.
Two projects tied for the No. 2 spot by each selling 52 homes. They are Country Village in Fontana, built by Fiesta Homes and offering houses ranging in price from $105,990 to $142,490, and Bear Valley in Murrieta, built by Continental Homes, which offers larger homes ranging in size from 1,808 to 3,165 square feet with base prices from $149,900 to $207,900.
Sun Lakes in Banning captured the No. 4 spot, selling 51 homes. This age-restricted project by Presley Companies offers homes ranging in size from 1,108 to 3,165 square feet with base prices from $149,900 to $207,900.
No. 5 was Vista Camarillo in Ventura County, by builder Anasthasi, selling 48 homes.
Kaufman & Broad Home Corp. had the most projects on the bestsellers list--five. Three developers tied for a close second with four projects on the list: Pardee Construction, Presley Cos. and Standard Pacific. Beazer Homes, Centex Homes and John Laing Homes followed closely, each with three projects on the bestsellers list.
