Volunteers Sought to Join Tree Planting

Share

The Sunland-Tujunga Chamber of Commerce is asking residents and business owners to join in a morning of tree planting Saturday along Foothill Boulevard.

“We’re doing this beautification project to improve the business environment and to raise the level of pride in our town,” said chamber President Kathy Anthony. The trees are 36 crape myrtles provided by the Los Angeles Conservation Corps, who will be on hand to lend equipment and assist with the planting. Drought-resistant crape myrtles are a common sight in the San Fernando Valley, where, depending on the species, their red, pink, lavender or white blossoms can be seen during the summer months.

Merchants on Foothill Boulevard between Floralita and McVine avenues, where the trees will be planted, have agreed to be responsible for watering and taking care of trees in front of their businesses for two years, until they are strong enough to survive on their own.

A free lunch will be provided to volunteers after the planting, which is scheduled to take place between 8 a.m. and noon.

Anyone interested in signing up for the project may contact the Sunland-Tujunga Chamber of Commerce at (818) 352-4433.
