Homeless Project Organizes Jobs Fair

The Homeless Employment Resource Operation is seeking employers from across Ventura County who are interested in being part of an upcoming jobs fair.

The event is scheduled for Aug. 10 at the Westpark Community Center and is intended to network local employers with HERO participants.

Launched last year in response to the devastating floods that washed out homeless people from the Ventura River bottom, the HERO program has emerged as a training and placement organization.

Its main purpose is to find jobs for qualified men and women who have struggled with homelessness and are committed to putting their lives back on track, HERO coordinators say.

Aided by government grants and funding from the city of Ventura, HERO has organized work crews to clean parks around the county. The program has also placed people in full-time clerical jobs and other office positions.

HERO organizers are now seeking nonprofit status and hope to eventually run the program without local government assistance.

The jobs fair is the program’s first attempt to bring prospective employees and employers together in a large setting.

It is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the gymnasium at the Westpark Community Center, 450 W. Harrison St.
