Improving on its sixth-place finish last year, Orange Coast College’s math team finished fifth in the nation at a recent competition sponsored by the American Mathematical Assn. of Two Year Colleges League.

The schools are ranked based on their performances in three rounds of competition, when students are tested on mathematical problems ranging from pre-calculus to trigonometry. Scores from each round are tabulated to determine the final standings.

Of OCC’s eight-member squad, Kychau Nguyen was the school’s lead finisher. Nguyen placed 33rd in the final standings, competing against more than 600 students.
