A San Juan Capistrano man, who was allegedly driving at more than 80 mph on a winding road Wednesday when he rear-ended another car and injured an 82-year-old woman, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, authorities said.

Investigators said Daryl Fischer, 29, was found hiding in some bushes after the accident.

He had been driving a black sports car in the fast lane on Golden Lantern Street near Calle de Tenis at about 1 p.m. when he tried to pass a car, Sheriff’s Lt. Richard Paddock said. As he switched to the right lane, he came behind another car traveling at about 35 mph and hit the brakes, deputies said.

The speed limit in the area is 40 mph, Paddock said.

Fischer “was going so fast that he laid a 200-foot skid mark before destroying the Saturn,” Paddock said.

Herman Luymes, the 87-year-old driver of the sedan, was not injured, but his passenger, Ruth Hughes, suffered a broken pelvis and was taken to South Coast Medical Center.

Witnesses pointed deputies to the driver of the sports car, who was in the brush, Paddock said.

Fischer was booked into the Orange County Jail on suspicion of drunk driving and evading arrest. He has two prior convictions, in 1990 and 1996, for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
