The Boston Red Sox wasted a seven-run lead and fell behind, but recovered to beat the New York Yankees, 12-11, Wednesday night at Boston on Jeff Frye’s ninth-inning single.

Boston led, 9-2, in the seventh but New York rallied to take an 11-9 lead in the ninth. Wetteland (0-2) then failed to hold it and his major league-record streak of saves in 24 consecutive appearances came to an end.

Tim Naehring walked with one out, Mike Stanley doubled off the wall, Kevin Mitchell struck out and Reggie Jefferson was intentionally walked.

Troy O’Leary’s double tied the score and Frye singled to right, giving Boston its seventh victory in eight games.

Baltimore 11, Toronto 10--Bobby Bonilla’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth capped a two-run rally against Mike Timlin that lifted the Orioles to a comeback victory at Baltimore.

The Orioles blew an early 7-3 lead and lost an 8-7 advantage in the eighth, then overcame a 10-8 deficit to beat Timlin for the second time in three games.

Milwaukee 3, Detroit 2--Jesse Levis singled home Jose Valentin from second base with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Brewers the victory at Milwaukee.

Detroit’s Omar Olivares and Milwaukee’s Ben McDonald both pitched nine innings, leaving with the score tied, 2-2.

Tom Urbani (1-2) walked Valentin to start the 10th and sent him to second with a wild pitch. One out later, Levis singled to left to score Valentin.

Minnesota 4, Chicago 3--Denny Hocking, who entered the game batting .169, went three for four and singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the Twins won at Minneapolis.

Dave Hollins singled off Bill Simas (0-5) to lead off the ninth and was sacrificed to second by Matt Walbeck. After pinch-hitter Chip Hale was walked intentionally, Hocking lined his single to center to score Hollins.

Kansas City 3, Cleveland 2--Jose Offerman doubled twice and the Royals took advantage of a poor Cleveland defense to beat the Indians at Kansas City.

Tim Belcher (8-5) gave up nine hits in eight innings. Jeff Montgomery finished for his 20th save and the 238th of his career, tying Dan Quisenberry’s team record.

Orel Hershiser (9-6) gave up 10 hits, struck out four and walked three in his first complete game since June 5, 1995.

Oakland 7, Seattle 6--Ernie Young’s seventh-inning home run, one of four hit by Oakland, broke a tie and sparked the Athletics at Oakland.

Young’s 13th home run, a one-out homer off reliever Blas Minor (0-1), landed in the soon-to-be-open bleacher seats over the left-field fence to break a 5-5 tie.

The A’s, who also got a three-run blast from Terry Steinbach, a two-run homer from Geronimo Berroa and a solo homer from Scott Brosius, lead the majors with 150 home runs, including 24 in their last 13 games.
