An 11-year-old girl, known as a “good student,” was under arrest Friday on suspicion of murder and attempted murder in the shotgun death of a 14-year-old boy and the wounding of another boy, police in San Bernardino said.

The girl was taken into custody after the shooting Thursday afternoon. Her mother was arrested for investigation of storing an unsecured firearm, a felony, police said.

Police believe that the shooting was prompted by the boys’ taunting of the girl as they stood in her front yard.

“Detectives aren’t sure exactly what words were being used,” said San Bernardino police spokesman Jim Hamlin. “All we know is they were in the front yard, they were yelling something to her.”

Apparently angry, the girl allegedly fetched a loaded shotgun that was kept in the house and fired a single round through the front window at 4 p.m., Hamlin said.

Evan Clark, 14, was struck in the chest and died on the front lawn, officials said.

Jeremy Elliot, 14, was being treated at Loma Linda University Medical Center for a wound to the jaw, Hamlin said. The boy was expected to survive.

The girl’s mother was not home at the time of the shooting, Hamlin said. The incident is not considered gang-related, he said.
