Emergency Goalie Stops the Bullfrogs

Share

San Jose turned to its front office for an emergency goalie and used him to beat the Bullfrogs, 8-6, in a Roller Hockey International game Friday in San Jose.

Jon Gustafson, who retired after last season to become San Jose’s general manager, started in goal in place of all-star Joe Bonvie, who was serving a one-game suspension for fighting. The move was necessary because San Jose reserve goalie Grant Sjerven was out with a hip injury.

Gustafson, who helped San Jose to the league championship last season, made 21 saves Friday.

“I was a little rusty,” Gustafson said. “But the guys took care of everything in our zone. It’s nice to get out there and play again.”

San Jose opened a 3-0 lead on power-play goals and was ahead at halftime, 6-3.

Mark Woolf scored three goals for San Jose (10-8-1). His final goal came early in the fourth quarter to put San Jose up, 8-4. He has 22 goals this season.

The Bullfrogs (12-3-2) got goals from Joe Cook and Mark Desantis midway in the fourth quarter but couldn’t score in the final six minutes.

On Sunday, the Bullfrogs, who have lost two in a row, host Vancouver, which leads the Northwestern Division. Anaheim will be without Cook, who got a fighting major penalty, a game misconduct penalty and was ejected.
