Mather, the food editor of the Detroit News, examines the dichotomy between mass-produced food and the more wholesome, flavorful food raised through smaller-scale, sustainable agriculture. She contrasts community-supported, organic agricultural programs with factory farms that crank out animals nurtured on hormones and antibiotics. The chemicals and mutations make food cheaper to produce and easier to ship--at the cost of a lack of flavor and damage to the environment. Mather urges consumers to consider whether they want cheap food or quality food.
