Martins, Portugal Ease Past Tunisia

Afonso Martins scored both goals in Portugal’s 2-0 victory over Tunisia at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.

The 23-year-old forward scored the decisive goal in the 13th minute and excited the 34,796 flag-waving, banner-toting fans with a spectacular 25-yard, left-footed strike for his second goal in the 67th minute.

The game was preceded by a one-hour ceremony during which Washington Mayor Marion Barry was booed loudly when he was introduced to give the welcoming speech.

In other games, Spain began defense of its Olympic gold medal with a 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia at Orlando, Fla. Oscar Garcia nodded a crossing pass from Gaizka Mendienta past Saudi goalkeeper Hussain Al-Sadig in the 79th minute.

At Miami, Robert Pires and Florian Maurice each had a goal to lead France past Australia, 2-0. France won its first gold medal in soccer 12 years ago in the Los Angeles Games.
