Astros Make Lone Run Count Against Padres
Shane Reynolds and Billy Wagner combined on a four-hitter and the Houston Astros defeated the San Diego Padres, 1-0, Monday at Houston for their fourth consecutive victory.
Sean Berry hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning for the lone run.
Reynolds (12-6) gave up four hits in eight innings. He struck out five, walked two and did not permit a runner past second base.
San Francisco 3, Chicago 2--Ryne Sandberg misplayed Marvin Benard’s two-out grounder in the ninth inning to hand the Giants the victory at San Francisco.
Sandberg, who tied it in the eighth with a leadoff homer off Jim Poole, was charged with an error on Benard’s two-out grounder that went under the second baseman’s glove, scoring Rich Aurilia.
Atlanta 8, St. Louis 6--Pinch-hitters Javier Lopez and Mark Whiten each hit two-run homers as the Braves rallied from a five-run deficit at St. Louis.
Greg McMichael (5-2) pitched two innings of scoreless relief, and Mark Wohlers got three outs for his 22nd save.
Cincinnati 5-5, Philadelphia 2-3-- Eric Davis hit two homers in support of pitcher Mark Portugal in the first game, and Thomas Howard’s two-run double in the ninth inning broke a tie and helped the Reds sweep the doubleheader at Philadelphia.
Cincinnati trailed, 3-2, in the ninth inning of the second game, but rallied against Ken Ryan (2-4).
Lee Smith (2-2) pitched the eighth, and Jeff Brantley the ninth for his second save of the night and his league-leading 26th.
