WASHINGTON, D.C. : Ban on Foreign Sheep Is Sought

U.S. sheep producers called for a ban on imports of all foreign sheep and sheep embryos after indications from Europe that mad cow disease could spread to sheep. The American Sheep Industry Assn. said in a letter to the Agriculture Department that extra precautions were needed to protect consumers. European Union Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler has announced plans for a Europewide ban on the human consumption of brains, spinal cords and spleen from sheep, goats and deer.
