Oakland cornerback Albert Lewis, largely quiet and a bit tentative since coming to the Raiders as a free agent in 1994 after 11 seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, is looking to another athlete and a different sport for inspiration this year.

“Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. If you’re a leader you had to pay attention to how that team played as a unit and played consistently,” said Lewis. “I think I learned a lot--not only about the way Jordan led, but the way he led by example.”

Last season, Lewis said, he didn’t speak up when Oakland started to lose games and dissension among his teammates grew. “I didn’t assume the responsibility and I should have. In a way, I felt a little bit intimidated. I didn’t really want to alienate myself,” he said.

When the Raiders lost three games in a row after going 8-2, Lewis caused a stir by commenting that the “character on our football team stinks.” The Raiders went on to lose their last three games and miss the playoffs.

Receiver Terry Glenn, a first-round draft choice, has been hit hard in New England’s camp to get him used to the trials of the NFL.

“[Personnel director] Bobby Grier and the coaches told me when I came up here there would be a lot of bump-and-run coverages,” Glenn said. “And with a guy like me, with my speed, they were going to try to keep me out of my routes. So that’s what they’re trying to do right now.”

The Patriots are looking to Glenn and free-agent signee Shawn Jefferson to help provide a long-passing game to complement the shorter game of quarterback Drew Bledsoe and tight end Ben Coates.

The Kansas City Chiefs signed several players, including linebacker Donnie Edwards, who was drafted in the fourth round from UCLA. Edwards signed a three-year contract, terms were not reported.

The Chiefs also signed veteran safety Martin Bayless to a three-year contract, wide receiver Victor Bailey, a restricted free agent who was inactive with Kansas City last year, to a two-year contract.
