Residents of the Ojai Valley have scheduled a remembrance for Sheriff’s Deputy Peter John Aguirre Jr. on Sunday afternoon.

Aguirre was shot and killed July 17 while responding to a domestic disturbance call in Meiners Oaks. He was honored and buried in a funeral service Monday.

Sunday’s scheduled community remembrance will combine prayer and song to honor Aguirre in a nondenominational service at Libbey Bowl.

The event is meant to bring together the community and give local residents a chance to show their appreciation for Aguirre’s work as a deputy, said Holy Cross Lutheran Church Pastor Kurt Christenson, who is coordinating the remembrance with several other pastors and ministers in the Ojai Valley.

The remembrance, set to begin at 4 p.m., will include representatives from most of the local churches, the Ojai City Council and the Sheriff’s Department, said Lynn Rastaetter of the Ojai Presbyterian Church.

Aguirre’s widow and several family members are expected to attend, Rastaetter said.

Libbey Bowl is in Libbey Park at Ojai Avenue and Signal Street. For more information, call 646-5652.
